Vintage Penske Racing Team Transporter Restored with ColorBond
Posted on December 17 2020

As a present to Roger Penske on his 70th birthday, he was presented with the fully restored truck his team used to transport the now-famous Sunoco-liveried Porsche 917-30 during their successful 1973 SCCA Canadian-American Challenge Cup championship season. This truck hauled their Porsche across the country, from Watkins Glen to Laguna Seca. The vintage Penske racing team transporter was also used in other capacities from 1972 to 1983, including driving the team to Indianapolis for Mark Donohue's 1972 Indy 500 victory. Their first Indy 500 win. ”We had to find a way to bring her back to life” said Tim Cindric, Team Penske President.
Before Restoration
The custom-built 1972 International Fleetstar was retired from service in 1983 and then sat unused for years. Then the 8,000 hour restoration began. Most every aspect of the vintage Penske Racing team transporter was returned to like new condition, including the interior. We at ColorBond are proud our LVP Refinisher was chosen to restore the dash and door panels. The interior trim paint may have cost less than $100, but the results are priceless!
These ‘BEFORE’ photos show the restoration challenges for the team…
