How to Apply ColorBond LVP OE
If you’re ready to achieve a professional-grade finish, just follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Remove the Component (If Possible)
For best results, take the component out of the vehicle. This gives you easier access and helps prevent overspray or uneven coverage due to surrounding surfaces.
Step 2: Clean Thoroughly with ColorBond Prep Cleaner
Use ColorBond Prep Cleaner to completely remove all dirt, oils, silicones, and conditioners. These residues can interfere with bonding and lead to poor adhesion. Even surfaces that appear clean can still have invisible contaminants; don’t skip this step.
Step 3: Apply Adhesion Promoter (For Hard Surfaces Only)
If you’re refinishing hard trim pieces like plastic door panels, dashboards, center consoles, pillars, or metal parts, apply a thin coat of ColorBond Adhesion Promoter. This prepares the surface and improves adhesion.
Do not use adhesion promoter on soft trim or leather; it’s not needed and could affect the finish.
Step 4: Allow the Surface to Dry Completely
Before applying ColorBond LVP OE, make sure the surface is completely dry. Moisture can affect how the product bonds and cures.
Step 5: Test the Color in a Small Area
Always start by spraying a small, discreet section. This gives you a chance to confirm the color match under real-world lighting before committing to the entire piece.
Step 6: Apply in Light Mist Coats
Shake the can well, then spray ColorBond LVP OE in light, even mist coats. Hold the can 6–8 inches away and use smooth, sweeping motions.
- Apply 2–3 light coats for full coverage.
- Avoid heavy applications to prevent runs or an uneven texture.
Step 7: Wait Between Coats
While ColorBond LVP OE dries to the touch in about 45 seconds, wait 10 minutes between coats. This allows for proper bonding and helps build a durable finish.
Step 8: Let It Cure
After the final coat, allow the surface to fully cure before handling or reinstalling. This helps lock in the color and ensures long-term durability.
